The Basics
A refresher on morphing itself...
A refresher on morphing itself...
We generally expect that people who join this site have read the books, but even then a little refresher on morphing doesn't hurt. Here are some key things we think you should need to know or remember.
1: In order to morph an animal you must have acquired it.
You acquire an animal's DNA by touching it. In our site, the Ellimist has a "nature reserve" set aside and protected - similar to the Hork-Bajir valley. Most morphs, especially dangerous ones, will be gotten there, however some can be acquired out in the world on missions as well.
2: When you morph you retain your human mind, but also gain the animal's instincts.
Think of it as two minds residing in the one body. The animal mind will try, at times, to overpower the human mind. The idea, however, is not to suppress the animal mind, but to work with it. You retain your humanity, while utilizing the animal's instincts for performing actions humans can't, for example flying.
3: You can only stay in morph for 2 hours.
Stay any longer and you become a nothlit like Tobias. This is to say that you become permanently trapped in that form. While the Ellimist did give Tobias his powers back, we do not guarantee your character will be granted the same option if you choose to trap them in a morph.
4: You can't morph regular clothing starting out.
Even the original Animorphs had to wear skin tight morph suits when they were first starting out. They took most of the series (2 or 3 years) to figure out morphing clothing. Since the leaders of the new generation of Animorphs have only had the power for two years, most recruits would still be at a point of needing a morph suit. The leaders themselves have probably only just started learning to morph normal clothes.
5: It is possible to be allergic to an animal's DNA.
This doesn't say you HAVE to be allergic to any DNA, just that it is possible. If you are allergic to an animal's DNA and you acquire it, the allergic reaction will cause you to morph uncontrollably whenever you feel a strong emotion. This will last until the DNA is expelled from your body.
*If you choose to have your character be allergic to an animal's DNA, we suggest looking over book 12, The Reaction, when Rachel learns she is allergic to crocodile DNA.
6: When in morph, you can communicate with others through thought-speak.
Also, if someone is not morphed, they can still hear your thought-speak, but will have to respond back verbally. Thought speak is written out just like in the books:
Rachel: (to Tobias) "Yeah. Look... I have a question for you. Do you ever think about years from now? Like when it's time for college and stuff?" (regrets instantly)
Tobias: (laughs) <<Yeah, I'm thinking I could get easy A's in ornithology -- the study of birds.>>
Rachel: "You could definitely be the professor. I just meant that sooner or later most of us are going to leave. Move somewhere else. What do we do then, if the Yeerks are still around?"
Tobias: <<I haven't really looked that far ahead. But I guess I figured the whole thing would sort itself out by then. The Yeerks win, and you don't have to worry about college. Or they lose, and we each go back to our normal lives. (dryly) Some of us more normal than others.>>
