PERSONALITY: Bright is one of the first words that come to mind when describing Elijah’s personality. From the beginning, he always wore a smile and knew how to brighten anyone’s day with a bit of clever wit or something goofy. He seems to always be in a good mood, rarely letting anything dampen his day. Added to that is his ability to talk to just about anyone. He has absolutely no problem starting conversations and talking, though he does occasionally go off into random tangents of him talking to himself. He also has a seemingly endless amount of energy and enthusiasm. He likes to always be moving and doing something, never able to stay and do nothing.
Elijah describes himself as clever, able to pick up on things very quickly. It may sound egotistical, which is another trait he sometimes carries around with him, but he does well with following logic and can deduce things about his surroundings with a fair amount of ease. Though, sometimes his logic can get lost in translation, leaving sentences unfinished as he rushes off into something with only a little bit of foresight; that shows his impatience, his unwillingness to wait for something to happen unless he absolutely has to. He uses a lot of wit when he talks, though that has noticeably lessened when he came back to the United States after visiting Cambridge. He is also known to jump from one topic to the next without warning.
Underneath that is a lot of distance, a bit of a barrier he forms around himself. For one reason or another, most likely attributing to his family life and his constant moving around, he does not like getting too close to people. It has nothing to do with trusting the other person, but simply not wanting to get too attached to something. It was bred into him in a way—his parents were naturally reserved people, the trait simply latching onto him. Part of him wishes he could be less reserved, not liking the feeling of always being alone, but his excuse is that he knows no other way.
To close, he is best described in terms of rain. Rain comes whenever it wants, sometimes not even waiting for the sun to hide completely behind the clouds. Oftentimes, it falls lightly, almost dancing on the ground. Rain can be warm, but it can also turn to ice; Elijah can switch between the two almost seamlessly. And, sometimes, the rain falls hard. The air becomes tense and thunder sounds in the background. Elijah does not get angry often, for he does not let himself. However, if he does, or if he is backed into a corner, it is the only time he will really raise his voice. It’s not wise to make him angry—you had best prepare yourself for a storm if that ever happens.
BACKGROUND: HOMETOWN: Canterbury, Kent County, England. HISTORY: Born to Henry and Caroline (née MacDonald) Townsend, Elijah was a privileged child. It wasn't simply because he lived in such a lovely city, but because of his somewhat large family. He was the family's second child out of four total, his oldest sister named Emma and his younger siblings named Thomas and Sophia, the latter the youngest out of all of them. Most of his extended family lived right in town as well, so visits from aunts, uncles, and grandparents were always expected; Grandmother Townsend always stopped by on Saturday mornings for tea without fail. Because of this, Elijah always had a close connection with his family, particularly his siblings.
From day one, he was curious and outgoing. When he was younger, this showed up in the form of trying to get his hands on everything and assess it in the form of play, or gather things and build something else with them. It was one of the many reasons Caroline rarely brought him with her for any sort of shopping, especially when he would grab things off of the shelves and leave them in the shopping cart for her to pay for when she wasn't looking. He loved figuring out how things worked, often breaking toys because of this, and learning in general. Caroline was relieved when she got him hooked on reading: he wouldn't stop, and he'd read just about anything.
He was also one of the unspoken favorites of the family. He and Emma, who was two years older than him, were the most exuberant of the four and were always running from one thing to the next with each other. Both of his parents described him as sweet and kind, never really that mean to his siblings, and always wearing a smile. They were not sure where it came from, both of them more reserved, but they certainly did not refuse this outgoing and eccentric nature of his.
Not many noteworthy things happened during his education career in general. He was a rather bright student, quick to learning with an enthusiasm that never really left him. When he was younger, it was difficult to keep his attention on just one thing; he liked to leap from subject to subject due to his everlasting curiosity about everything. He had a few friends, but not really any good ones he could rely on in the end—elementary friendships don’t truly last that long, especially when one is considered “odd”.
Unfortunately, his education career wasn't in one place. His father was a businessman, and was offered a better job up in Cambridge. It was an excellent opportunity, and it would give all of the Townsend children the chance to live in a University city-- and of course go there eventually, if possible. So, when he was in year three or so of primary school, Elijah and his family moved to Cambridge. He lost touch with practically all of his friends there, and found it difficult to hold onto new ones-- at least in the beginning. He made friends in his new primary school, but went to a different secondary school than they did. There just always seemed to be something in the way of him holding onto friends for long periods of time; he and his family did love to travel around the United Kingdom when they could. Alas, it made it so his friendships were never permanent.
He also said his family changed during the move too. The extended family did not visit as often as they had in the past, some not at all, and his immediate family slowly became disconnected from one another. Both parents seemed to always be working, his mother able to find a good job in Cambridge. The siblings, because of their various age differences, started to grow apart as they all went to school. Emma and Elijah were still rather close, almost best friends, but even that relationship faded as she went into college. Elijah once told her, offhandedly of course, that even though this house was full of people, he still felt alone, like the people in it weren’t really all there; he certainly didn’t help it by being somewhat distant himself. It seemed off at the time, but fueled his later thinking.
When he started college, it was plain to see what he was going to focus on: physics. He wanted to pursue a doctorate in physics, understand the ways the world worked, build fantastic things, and maybe fix some of the world’s problems. He started attending Cambridge University after he finished college, the only one of the siblings to ever do so, when he was eighteen and was doing reasonably well until he was about twenty. It seemed sort of random, but all of a sudden he wanted to go over to the United States. His parents asked him why when he said this, receiving this as an answer, with his typical enthusiasm: “England’s only one island. There’s more to see out there, more to do! I can’t spend the rest of my life in just one place.”
His parents couldn’t help but continue and wonder why. He was going to Cambridge for his degree in physics, and they were known worldwide for their sciences. Why in the world did he want to go to the United States if he was already attending Cambridge University? If he left now, he might not be able to continue. They confronted him on this again, and he only said that something was happening in the United States, something that could possibly affect the entire world. It was something big, and he wanted to know more.
“But Elijah, what about us, your family?”
“Yes, what about you?” Flippant, and startling.
“Well, you can’t exactly hop across the pond and hop back all the time. We’re hardly going to get to see you anymore. Have you taken that into account?”
“I have, and--”
“Does it even matter to you that you’ll be missed? You and I both know that if you go over there, you may not come back. You don’t know what’s happening over there.”
“All the more reason to go and find out.”
“And what about your education?”
“It’ll be here when I get back. It’s not as if Cambridge has moved in the last eight hundred years.” Usual attitude, same smile at his joke. Neither of his parents was smiling, and paused before they said their last statement to him.
“Are you even going to miss us?”
A pause. “Yes, I will.”
After he finished his second year at Cambridge, Elijah made the transition over to the United States. He refused most help from his parents and family in the process, gathering all of his things as quick as possible before flying out to the East Coast of the United States on an early morning flight. He flew into Boston and officially made himself a citizen of the United States shortly afterward. It was while he lived in Boston, a city he found to be quite full of interesting people, that he started finding out what was going on. He started learning about the Yeerks, and what the Animorphs did to defend not only this country, but the world itself. It was quite amazing, spectacular really.
Elijah did not truly pursue further education other than a class here and a class there, anything he could afford. Part of the problem was that he kept moving around, showing his flightiness. He stayed in Boston for maybe a year before driving down to New Jersey out of curiosity. He did odd jobs there for about six or seven months before going to Chicago. He stayed there for a year or so, leaving out of dislike for the snow. He went to South Carolina, where he could have stayed for a while had he not saw and heard what was happening. The Yeerks weren’t hiding what they were doing. They were on the move in the United States. They were trying to enslave the human race.
All Elijah could wonder was if it was happening back home in England. He was about twenty four when he sold his car and flew back to Cambridge. Back home, it was the same. The Yeerks were taking over, though admittedly they were having a bit of difficulty in the more southern parts of England. Northern England had already been completely taken over, but London was putting up its usual fight. Cambridge, though—poor Cambridge. Elijah knocked on the door to his house, and swore he barely recognized the family that was there. They were now Controllers. They were no longer the Townsends. Even Emma, who he had known to be so resilient, was one of them now.
He had to do something about this. Unfortunately, his family was already lost to him; he knew that, or so he felt anyway. But, perhaps he could go back to the United States and see if he could fight this. The Animorphs had once been in the United States; who was to say that they weren’t there again? He wanted—no, needed—to help. As much as he was against fighting wars and all of that, something needed to be done. He wasn’t sure what, but something.
His arrival back to the United States was quick. He found another car, a dark blue used Honda Pilot, and drove it all over the country to try and find answers. There wasn’t much he could find, and he had to make sure he avoided becoming a Yeerk himself. He couldn’t get too close, which turned out to be annoying. After a few months of driving around, he started hearing rumors—this happened more as he headed more west. Seattle was the host of Animorphs, a city fighting back. He was just about giddy with that news, and started driving to Seattle straightaway.
