Kyle stood on the boat they were on, watching the waves splash against the side. Of course, they weren't here for sight-seeing. That was a somewhat disappointing thought really. Nowadays even a trip like this meant they had some sort of mission going on. Then again, he had to pick his battles. He couldn't lead the Animorphs and regret that he felt like the war had taken over his life.
On another note, the mission wasn't exactly one he was keen on letting wait. As soon as they'd heard about it, he'd known this was something they needed to go check out and do something about. The yeerks had some kind of underwater base going, and he didn't want to wait to find out what it was they were hiding down there. Chances were it was not good and it would spell trouble for them. He'd rather find out about it now. That and possibly destroy whatever it was before there was a chance for it to become a major threat.
He glanced around, the boat - a whale watching vessel, the deck currently empty. Things were safe right now, but who knows how long that was going to last.
"Where are we in comparison to the base, Eric?" He radioed back to the Sanctuary.
"You're as close as you're going to get. Pretty much dive straight down, you'll see it as you get close."
"Thanks." That was all he'd needed to know.
"Ok everyone," he said to those gathered with him. "Now's the time to turn back, and I won't think any different of anyone who chooses to back out. Those of you still ready to do this, it's morphing time. Get into those waves, morph, and we'll regroup once we're down there."
He ran over his thoughts in his mind, trying to make sure that was all that needed to be said. Then he glanced around for other people again before climbing up the railing and then diving overboard into the waves. Even before his head had resurfaced he was starting the morph to whale.

Rue kind of didn't picture their first big mission thing to be in the middle of the water. Sure, it was going to be pretty neat to use that penguin morph of hers for the first time since training with it, but she thought for sure that there was going to be a mission in the actual city they were in. Right now, they were on a whale watching boat that was probably a touristy thing before the Yeerks came. Kyle told them that the Yeerks had a base underwater, and that's what they were going to look into today. And, they'd probably have to stop it too. Though, if they had to do that, she wasn't sure how yet.
Eric said the base was straight down from here-- just dive straight down. Rue glanced over the side of the boat, even though she knew she wouldn't be able to see it from here. She was okay with water-- always knew how to swim and all of that good stuff. She turned back to Kyle as he talked. This was it. If people were going to turn back and not do this, now was the time to do that. She wasn't about to though. She had to do one thing right as an Animorph instead of just have her one moment be when she was fooled by the Yeerks.
"Gotcha," she muttered, looking over the edge of the boat again for just a minute. Yep, she had to dive now. She had to jump into what was probably really cold water, morph in really cold water, and then swim straight down. That was simple enough, right? A minute after Kyle jumped in, she looked back to the rest of the group. "I'll be seeing ya down there," she told them, then climbing onto the railing herself. She dived straight down into the water, resurfacing quickly with chattering lips. "This is really, really cold by the way," she said. Right, focus on the penguin that could handle this cold. Hopefully, by the time everyone got in the water, she'd be done morphing.

Ugh, why did it have to be water? Jack thought as he looked over the side of the boat. The normally much more calm and collected leader was obviously having issues with the current mission they were undertaking. They had received some information that the Yeerks were building an underwater base. As much as you would just like to ignore something involving water, a new Yeerk base wasn't something they couldn't ignore. They needed to infiltrate the base and make sure that anything that could be a threat was destroyed, the base itself if they could. However, did it really have to be underwater?
Jack took a deep breath. It wasn't like he hadn't done a water mission before. He had a dolphin morph after all, its why he was on this mission. He'd done it dozens of times before. However, it never seemed to get easier and he always had a fear of drowning linger in the back of his mind. He could kind of swim, but not very well. Which was why Kyle was the one giving orders and Jack hadn't said a word. It was almost an unspoken rule between the three leaders that when it came to water, Ashley and Kyle stepped up, while Jack took a back seat and focused solely on making it through the water. Once he was morphed, the dolphin mind would hopefully calm him down a bit.
Before he knew it Kyle had dropped into the water, followed by Rue. He didn't really register what anyone had said. He took another deep breath. "Its just water, Jack," he muttered, trying to reassure himself. "Just, jump in, morph and get it over with..." He then closed his eyes and started thinking about the dolphin, before letting himself fall over the side of the boat. He was a little panicked but thankfully, able to focus and finish the dolphin morph relatively quickly after hitting the water. The dolphin mind surfaced soon enough and helped easy him, it was hard to be bothered when the dolphin mind was so playful. <<Ugh, It never does get any easier>> he privately thought to Kyle. Hopefully,Jack would be better when they got to the base.

"Well this will be interesting," Sam muttered, keeping a close eye on Jack as he looked over the side of the boat. It was hard to focus on what Kyle was saying since her boyfriend decided that water wasn't his thing and she could sense how uneasy he was, but she got the general idea. Nodding in agreement, the brunette was up on the railing when Kyle was, gracefully diving into the water with minimal splashing and focused on the blue whale.
Feeling her body expand and change, the girl took a deep breath of water once she was fully morphed, an excited sound leaving her as she looked to make sure the others were alright. It wasn't the easiest thing to do once you've morphed into the largest whale in existence, but at least she could see everyone. Catching a glimpse of Jack, the blue whale gently pressed her fin against the dolphin and attempted a smile in her massive form. <<It's going to be okay, Jack. I won't let anything happen to you,>> she murmured privately, diving down below the dolphin and the others as she awaited instruction.
She knew deep down that Jack was terrified of drowning. She knew just about everything about the boy, and unfortunately that was why he was so antsy. That was probably why she chose the whale morph. Just in case. It was fast, despite its size, and if someone was in danger of drowning she could grab them in her mouth and they would be safe until they got to the surface. This didn't just go for Jack, it was a universal rule for her. She was there for anyone and everyone that needed her, but she worried the most about Jack. It took her a moment to see Rue wasn't there just yet and she returned to the surface, blowing water out of her blowhole and speaking to Rue privately. <<You okay, Red? Water's not as cold when you morph.>>

Kyle's morph was a newer one. For the longest time he'd had a leopard seal. However, when it had been decided he was going to lead this mission, it had been decided that the leopard seal just wasn't going to cut it for this mission. Because of that he was originally planning on using his orca whale morph. He'd morphed it before, when he'd acquired it. He knew from experience that he sometimes had trouble with a new animal mind - more trouble than others, and he hated to admit that. He couldn't just wing it and morph a completely new form for the first time during a mission. There was too much danger in that.
The morphing itself went smoothly, the only thing being he had reverted to the familiar instead and was focusing on the seal. Force of habit. Blonde hair pretty much vanished as his skin turned rubbery and then patterned in fuzzy greys. All the various transformations, including the change in size, went by in a matter of minutes as the others jumped into the water with him. He had finished morphing and was starting to look around for the others when he heard the private thought from Jack. He knew how Jack felt about water. To be honest, he figured it would always be either himself or Ashley leading water morphs. Jack needed to be able to focus on himself and making it through the mission, and he couldn't do that if her were worried about a whole team under his command.
<<It never gets any easier, but you've never let it stop you from going on a mission.>> Whether it was bravery, insanity, or some combination of the two, Jack didn't let his fear stop him. Then again, Kyle sometimes wondered if being an Animorph required some small lack of sanity. Certainly a lot of the things they did could be considered insane, but it never stopped them.
Looking around Kyle could see that Sam and Jack were with him. Rue was not. <<Everything ok, Rue?>> He sent privately, his voice showing that he only asked out of concern. He could see where Sam had surfaced, and figured - or hoped - Rue was nearby. He didn't know if she could answer his question. Whether she could or couldn't, if something was really wrong she'd hopefully find a way to let him know.

All the Strange, Strange Creatures Music --
Rue was never the best at focusing-- not now, not ever. It took her a second to start picturing the penguin clearly in her head before starting the morphing process. Sure, she had practiced with the penguin maybe once, but everything was still something to get used to. The whole different mind thing was something in itself, and she found that out with the leopard. While partially underwater, the process began. Skin became black plumage while feet became webbed. Her arms shrunk dramatically to become the flipper-like wings that would make swimming a whole lot easier. Though, she didn't know how diving was going to work.
It took a few minutes, but she was able to answer Sam and Kyle after he asked if she was all right. <<Doing good now, thank you both>> she replied. The penguin was not happy with the leopard seal right near it, one of its only predators. It wanted to swim as far away as possible from it, and the big humongous whale that Sam had become. The dolphin, which was Jack she was guessing, it was pretty much okay with-- didn't know what it was of course. <<Everyone else okay and ready?>> She was nervous of course, big mission and all that. The penguin's nerves weren't helping much either.

Jack tried his best to balance control between his mind and the dolphin mind. He needed to let the dolphin mind be playful and relaxed, if only so he didn't think about the fact there was water all around him now. However, he also needed to stay somewhat in control so the dolphin mind didn't wander off too much and get him distracted. He heard a reply from Kyle saying how his fear had never stopped him from doing one of these missions before. <<I know...I must be crazy.>>he replied. He'd have to be crazy if he was willing to be in water, let alone go deeper in it, for around two hours at a time.
He then heard Sam give him some reassurance as well. <<I know you won't, Sam. Appreciate it.>> he told her, doing his best to make it sound like it calmed him. It did a little bit, but it would never enough to have him get over being in the water. He noticed Rue drop down in the water and that meant everyone was here and ready. That only left one thing to do: swim. <<As ready as I'll ever be.>> he responded to Rue's question. He started swimming towards their target.

<<Good. Just give me a holler if you're losing it, though. You can hitch a ride with me if you need to,>> she answered, keeping an eye on the dolphin as she swam back over to the rest of them and a mental yawn escaped her.
<<Yeah, I've been ready. Just make sure no whaling ships come after me, okay guys? I'd really like to avoid that at all costs.>> She hated whaling ships. With a burning passion. It didn't matter whether she was the blue whale or not, they scared the absolute freaking crap out of her. The ships and the men on them. No contest.
Regardless about how nervous she was about the situation, the blue whale's calm mind melded with hers and she sighed, following after her friends and keeping a close eye on them. The last thing she wanted was for something to go wrong. It never fails. Their missions were usually a success but things never were easy for them. For once couldn't they have an easy job?! That would make life so much easier, but no. The universe just loved being a buttface and leaving them all to have crazy adventures that nobody would believe later on. Whoop de freaking doo.
