Brayden wasn't even sure what he was going anymore, he had been on the ship for a year, a year since Kyle had pretty much saved his life, a whole year to be around the person he wanted more than anyone else in the world, or space for that matter. Why was this so hard for him? He had been thinking over and over in his head, maybe he should leave, just go back to Earth and pretend none of this even happened. That Kyle never saved him from the Yeerks, that Kyle wasn't pretty much his best friend, a best friend that he wanted to be more. Brayden knew that was never going to happen, that is what was upsetting him more than anything, these feeling would never be returned.
If he ever told Kyle exactly how he felt, Kyle would freak out, Kyle would leave him and not want to be around him anymore, Brayden didn't want that to happen. He was just going to have to sit here, read books, morph when needed, and never tell Kyle how he felt, that was just the way it was going to have to be. Brayden lost himself in his book, a book he had read many times before but he wanted to lose himself into a world and a life that wasn't his. A life where someone was happy, and not his screwed up life. Not his life where he was in love with his straight best friend, a life where he wasn't a freak who turned into animals, a life where everything could be perfect, if only just for a moment.

Normally no one used the meeting room, at least not aside from times when Kyle, Ashley, and/or Jack called an actual meeting. When Kyle walked past, he hadn’t expected to see lights on inside or see anyone there. The very fact that the lights were on, that there was someone in there when it was otherwise not being used, was what caught his attention and caused him to stop and look.
He stepped in, finding Brayden inside reading a book. Brayden was one of a handful of the Animorphs they’d recruited who had known, or at least known of, the three leaders before this whole thing had started. Kyle remembered how Brayden had ended up being recruited. He’d been a controller, and he’d stowed away on The Sanctuary when the Animorphs had tried to steal the ship. It had been easy to overpower him, to tie him up and starve out the yeerk controlling Brayden’s actions. After that, they’d offered Brayden the same choice the offered anyone: They could try to find him somewhere safe and he could go back to his life, or he could join them in fighting to stop this invasion. He’d chosen to become an Animorph.
Kyle stood in the doorway, watching him for a moment. He found himself wondering, as he had a few times since recruiting Brayden, why the two of them had never known each other better before this whole mess. They’d both been social outcasts for different reasons. Kyle, while he could have looked the part of a jock, was a complete klutz. Brayden was a quiet loner, and had been considered by most to be a complete geek. Yet the two had never crossed paths beyond the occasional run-in in the hallways or classes. They’d never gotten to know each other before now, not that Kyle knew Brayden all that well now either. Brayden was still a loner and Kyle was one of the leaders, one of the people everyone seemed to need at one point or another during the day. Right now was one of those times when Kyle could relax and be himself… and maybe now he could do something about how little he knew Brayden too.
“Good book?” he asked, finally announcing his presence. He grabbed one of the chairs around the table and spun it so the back was towards Brayden, straddling the chair and sitting down, folding his arms over the top of the back. Brayden had his full attention, and he wasn’t going anywhere right now. That much would be clear.

Brayden hadn't heard the door open, in fact, he was so engrossed in the book the outside world didn't matter anymore, he was lost in the book, he was in a world were everything was perfect and there was no pain and no feelings for. Brayden stopped, his eyes frozen on the page. It couldn't be. Why would Kyle come looking in here for anyone, there was no meeting today. Brayden slowly looked up from his book. There was Kyle, sitting in his signature way, his full lips looking kissable and that hair. Brayden shook the thoughts out of his head and faked a smile.
"Hey Kyle, I hope I am not in trouble by being in here. I just needed out of my room, I felt like I was going to go crazy in there" said Brayden marking his page and closing the book.
Brayden wished that he could tell Kyle how he felt, he had a fantasy where Kyle admitted that he liked him too and they were so very happy. That would never happen, he was cursed, he was cursed with having to be around his crush and never getting him.

Kyle laughed a little when Brayden asked if he was in trouble. “If you were, there would be more than just me here right now and I’d have asked you to leave.” He paused a moment before saying, “In other words, no, you’re not in trouble. This room is never used unless there is a meeting going on. I can understand wanting to get out of your room and… well… I guess if you’re looking for a place to be alone this would probably be one of the best ones on the ship.”
Kyle generally did go to his room to be alone, but that was more private than anywhere else on the ship. For him it worked better, because no one could just barge in and invade on his space. He did need space now and then. He’d realized after a little while that he had gotten so used to being the outsider – being mostly on his own – that he couldn’t really deal with always having people around him. Even sometimes Ashley was a little more than he could handle, and that had caused a few fights. Ashley ended up thinking she had done something wrong or that he was mad at her… Though she was getting better about not blaming herself for things she couldn’t have controlled. It just seemed like she wanted their relationship to be like it had been before high school, and that might never happen.
“So,” he said, bringing his mind back to the present, “what are you reading?”
