Goal: Locate Victoria Bug Zoo, Victoria, British Columbia, Canada.
Status: Goal achieved.
Shiro stood in a moonlit parking garage across the street from the insectarium, waiting. His two underlings monitored an infrared camera and a laser microphone. Any minute now they would be able to start the process of achieving their next goal.
"That's it. He's alone now. Everyone else has gone home," his underling Alpha said. Efflit didn't bother learning the names of his underlings. Or rather, it was easier to give them new names for out in the field and save their true names for pool talk. Which he never partook in with his underlings.
"Should we move out?" underling Beta asked.
Across the street he watched a raspberry red minivan drive away from the bug zoo. Their target was alone now. "Yeah. Now we go."
His underlings packed up their equipment and followed as Efflit led the way to the railing of the parking garage. They were on the second story, and the garage was closed up for the night, but there was a handy birch tree which would allow them easy access to the sidewalk below. Efflit and his underlings shimmied down in no time and crossed the street.
Once in front of the building, Beta pulled out a key ring filled with master keys from various lock sets. He found the one that matched the set used on the door and before long they were standing inside a dark and empty building.
"Nightvision on," Efflit commanded. He pulled down his visor and the room was instantly bright as day. Without words Efflit drew a handgun and motioned for his underlings to follow him. They drew their own firearms and obeyed without question. Cautiously and silently the trio stalked down the halls and up the stairs to the room where they last knew their target to be. There was a door with a crack of light leaking out from underneath. He was there.
They sidled up to the door frame silently and Efflit pushed the door open just enough to peek inside. And there, sitting at a research station studying a critter, completely unaware of his pursuers, was the arachnologist.
With barely a signal, Efflit and his underlings lifted up their nightvision and burst into the room, surrounding the scientist. "Don't move!" Efflit said, his weapon aimed at the scientist's head.
The scientist yelped and knocked over his stool as he tried standing up. He raised his arms in surrender and tried to retreat, but there was nowhere to retreat to. "Wha- what's going on!?" The man was obviously caught completely unawares and looked as if he might actually have a heart attack at any moment.
"We came here for something. And we expect you to give it to us."
"Whatever you want, it's yours. Just take it! Please, just let me live."
Efflit could feel his host recoiling at the sight of the doomed man, knowing what was coming. All the same, Efflit forced Shiro's lips into a cracked grin. "Oh, you'll live, don't you worry. We wouldn't have gone through all this trouble just to kill you. Submit to The One and all will be forgiven."
The arachnologist's face twisted in confusion, then suddenly widened in comprehension. "Y- you're yeerks!"
Efflit kept the smile on his face as he held out an open palm to one of his underlings. Alpha placed what appeared to be a large thermostat in his hand. Within the capsule was another of his species. A lucky individual selected to receive a host. "Submit willingly and your pain will only be lessened."
"Never!" the man screamed, then picked up the critter he had been studying and flung it at Shiro's face. A large dark bug landed on his cheek and delivered a painful sting before dropping to the ground. Instantly Alpha and Beta moved in and restrained the man with ease. Efflit bent over and picked up the scorpion by the tail that had stung him.
"What is this?" Efflit asked the scientist, holding the scorpion an inch from the man's face. The bug withered and squirmed as it tried to escape.
Looking more afraid of the scorpion than the men holding him, the scientist replied, "It's your death!"
"Interesting..." Already he could feel the poison overtaking Shiro's body in the form of a swelling cheek. Efflit took a moment to acquire the little beast, then dropped it to the ground and crushed it beneath his boot. He then ignored the spreading poison and opened his silver capsule. "Tilt his head."
The man twisted and squirmed worse than the scorpion had, but had no better luck in escaping. Soon one of Efflit's gray-green brethren was sliding down the scientist's ear canal and the squirming stopped. Before long the man stood up on his own, unrestrained. "I am Torkin 424. I believe you are in need of my assistance?"
Efflit smiled again, although it was difficult with his swelling cheek. He could barely see out of his right eye anymore. "For the remainder of this mission you will be referred to as Gamma, understood? And I would appreciate it if you could locate some anti venom for me."
"Of course." The new controller bowed and went to locate the anti venom. Of course Efflit could morph and demorph at any time and be cured, but it would be troublesome with all the equipment he was wearing. Besides, a minor test in loyalty never hurt. And this underling would certainly need to be loyal if he really was expected to help them with bug-related security measures.
