Ashley stared at her reflection in the window of a store as they passed it. The face that stared back at her wasn't familiar. The girl had dark brown hair with a bit of a wave to it. Warm brown eyes stared out of a face with a tan skin tone. It wasn’t a tan that just made her look like she’d gone to the beach a lot either. It was one of those colors that you only got by having a multi-ethnic background. None of it was real, not really anyways. It was a morph. The morph didn’t have her borrowing someone else’s face, though. It was one strand of DNA created by merging several strands she’d acquired. The technique something she and the other leaders had learned from an andalite who’d been trapped on Earth, and they’d known they might need it someday. That day had come. Their faces were too recognizable, in Seattle especially. This girl, however, no one would recognize. The same was true of the morphs Kyle and Jack had created. None of them really existed. Some of them, like Ashley’s, being a combination of DNA strands that never had and never would merge in real life.
She stopped staring and started moving again, needing to keep up with Evvie, Sam, and Sarah. Without even really thinking, she spoke the words she was intending to tell the others. “You know, this wasn’t a bad idea, but it takes a little getting used to.” Fortunately no one walking past would understand what Ashley was talking about, they might think she was referring to the Ladies Night that the four of them were having. Or that’s what it looked like they were doing anyways. Sarah was really relaying information to the three Animorph girls.
Ashley was really saying that the human morph hadn’t been a bad idea. It did take getting used to though, because she knew she was in a human form and kept expecting to see her own face in reflections. Instead she saw the face of her morph, a face that didn’t exist except for the periods of time that Ashley used it. Also, she didn’t always remember that she had the ability to use thought speak. She was human, but this wasn’t her real self. This technically was a morph, she technically could use thought speak… If she ever remembered to do so it would be fantastic.
They were heading to a restaurant for food after doing some shopping. Ashley had actually been buying clothing for her morph, because the morph was a good inch or so taller than Ashley actually was. None of her clothing quite fit this body. Though it wasn't as bad as Kyle, who'd shrunk a good three inches when he'd morphed.
By Ashley's count they were still good on time for getting to the restaurant, but she thought she'd give the others a heads up. "Just so you know, I'll probably need to use the restroom when we get there." That was code for she'd need to demorph and remorph in the restroom, in a stall so she wouldn't be seen. The one downside to the morphed disguises, there was still a two hour time limit.
