Jack forgot for a moment that Kyle didn't like the attention they received much more than he did. While Jack was annoyed or indifferent to most of the fame, Kyle showed more disdain and resentment to it. Jack didn't really blame him, the way Kyle was treated in high school. Ashley looked a bit upset that she had brought up the topic now. Jack frowned. Ashley nowadays always seemed to take every mistake, no matter how small, especially hard. Both he and Kyle had seen how much she had changed and had both forgiven her, he just wished she would stop being so hard on herself. The past was the past, they couldn't do anything about it now, they could only go forward.
Kyle went on about how the people looked at them like super heroes and of course what he said was probably exactly how the people thought when they were spotted. Jack didn't really see themselves, or more importantly himself, as a super hero though. He was just someone trying to do what was right. Then he commented on how philosophical it had sounded and Ashley teased him about how he always sounded like that. Jack smirked again. "Ashley's got a point, you know," he told Kyle. "You even managed to do it and relate it to the Justice League at the same time. Not many people can do that," It was surprising at times the insight Kyle had. It definitely had helped them out in the past. Though each of them brought different perspectives to the table, that's what made them effective in leading together.

Kyle saw how Ashley reacted to what he'd said, and immediately regretted the words he'd said. He knew that lately she took every mistake much harder than she needed to. The mistakes of her past haunted her, and she wouldn’t deal with them or let them go, so she kept acting like she needed to be inhumanly perfect to somehow balance it out. Even the smallest error or disagreement, like what had just happened, she would hold onto and punish herself for.
“Ash… please don’t,” he said, his look concerned but stern. “You spoke without thinking, it was an honest mistake. You weren’t trying to bother me, and I’m honestly ok. The topic was quickly dropped anyways.” It got dropped because none of them liked being popular for what they were doing. Jack didn’t care for it, Kyle resented it, and Ashley… It probably reminds her too much of the past, a past that she’s not proud of. He wasn’t sure, and he’d never asked, but he knew that she found their being in the limelight no more enjoyable than he and Jack did.
He set down his pie and pulled her into a hug, something he’d taken to doing a lot when she was feeling down about something she’d done and he knew she was going to try and beat herself up over it. “You’ve got to stop walking forward while looking backwards, Ash. Otherwise someday you’re going to crash into a wall.” The joke would end up with her being mad at him, but that was the point. If she was mad at him, she wasn’t being mad at herself.

The look she got from Kyle, it was one he'd given her a lot lately. She had a feeling this wasn't the last time she'd see it either, until she figured out how to move past her past mistakes and stopped being so hard on herself. She wasn't sure what it would take to make that happen though, not yet. Maybe someday she’d figure it out, maybe when she’d figured herself out better. Or maybe that was the key to figuring herself out, and she just hadn’t realized it yet. I don’t know. I just know I can’t be that girl anymore. I have to be different… She had to prove to herself, and to Jack, and to her brother, that she wasn’t really that girl on the inside.
Before she could really dwell on that thought, on the memories that it always brought up, her brother had pulled her into a hug, and she just let him. She couldn’t have fought her way out of it anyways. Of course, that didn’t stop her from rolling her eyes and his sarcastic attempt at sympathy. “Only you would make a metaphor into something so literal.” She knew what he was trying to do, unfortunately for her this tactic had always proven very effective, and it had done its job again.

Jack mostly was quiet while Kyle took care of getting Ashley to stop being hard on herself for such an easy mistake. He didn't really see himself as being the one to make her feel better. After all, he felt like he had been part of the problem to begin with. He had never gotten the chance to voice his thoughts on the subject, but this wasn't the time to be thinking on that right now. It looked like Kyle had managed to get Ashley's mind off of it, he was particularly good at doing so.
While the twins where still hugging, Jack put down his plate most of the pie on it already gone. He went over and wrapped his arms around them, joining in on the hug. "Sorry, was feeling a little left out," he teased the two. All and all it had been a good anniversary so far. The day was practically over when he called them over, so they didn't really have to worry about trouble brewing. It had been a nice day, for once not one that they had to be worried about plans or The One or the Yeerks. However, that didn't mean they weren't still a threat. Tomorrow they would go back to normal day to day operations. But for now they could enjoy the short break while they had it.
